Hintf: Thank you for answering this interview! What can you tell us about the history of the band, how did the project become alive?

Marax: The band was formed in 2017 and is composed of members who are also in other Slovenian metal bands (Cvinger, Cordura, Morana). The band/project was powered by the members’ mutual passion for symphonic black metal music. Marax represents one of the Satan’s daemons, and is among others the daemon of justice.

Hintf: what can we expect from your upcoming EP The Abyss of Illusions?

Marax: It will be the first EP of our band. The style of our music is predominantly symphonic black metal; however, we are not limited to a specific genre but rather try to experiment with music. Every member adds his or her own aspect to the final product, which, as we hope, creates a unique sound and atmosphere of the music. For example, the guitars and the drums are considerably technical, whereas the bass connects the whole thing together. There are orchestral parts with a solo violin creating a more symphonic ambience. The vocals are sometimes spoken in both English and French, and the lyrics basically describe the passage from life to death.

Hintf: Do you feel the pressure of how the fans are going to react to it?

Marax: To be honest, we are not too concerned about the fans’ reaction since it is only our beginning. Even though we aim mostly at (symphonic) black metal audience, we are trying to surpass the limits and are open in style. We create the music that we like and we think that there are going to be some people who will appreciate it.

Hintf: What is the process of composing?

Marax: Firstly, after we get the inspiration for music, we write down the music in music editors. Then we “build” around the compositions, and finally, every member adds his note to the final product.

Hintf: What are the plans for the future of the band, your expectations?

Marax: We are going to release the first EP at the end of April, but the second EP is already in process. We aim to play at concerts in Slovenia and abroad as much as possible. We expect to perform not only in the form of a musical concert, but also to make shows from a theatrical point of view.

Hintf: What gear do you use?

Marax: We use 7-string handmade guitars and 5-string homemade bass, all made by the guitarist Nord Slayer. The guitarist uses Kemper Profiler Amplifier. The drummer uses the Tama Starclassic B/B drum set and Murat Diril, Meinl, Istambul, Zildjian, and Wuhan cymbals. The vocalist uses the Shure SM57 microphone. The violinist uses classical and electric violin and the keyboards are used from several samples for now.

Hintf: Do you have any shows planned for the upcoming months?

Marax: Yes, for now we are playing as support bands at Fuck off Commercial Festival (30th anniversary) on 28 April 2018, in Slovenia. We are still planning to have some shows in Slovenia later this year.

Hintf: What are your references in the genre?

Marax: Dimmu Borgir, Dissection, Anorexia Nervosa, Old Man’s Child, Emperor as more symphonic black metal bands. Otherwise, we are inspired by many other bands, such as Devil Doll, Bathory, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Mayhem, and also classical music.

Hintf: Can we expect you here in Portugal one day?

Marax: Sure, it would be a great pleasure to come. We would like to spread our music in Portugal as well as in other countries.

Hintf: If you could choose anyone alive or dead to join you on stage who would it be?

Marax: For the alive ones, it would be Dimmu Borgir, Old Man’s Child, Emperor, Mayhem and Fleshgod Apocalypse. For the dead ones or the already slit-up bands, it would be Dissection, Death, Bathory, Anorexia Nervosa.

Hintf: Do you want to leave a message for your portuguese fans?

Marax: Keep supporting the extreme metal and muito obrigado pelo seu tempo.
